Broome To Kununurra

OK, here's the next edition.
It's been a while since we left Broome and we are now currently in Kununurra. Here's what happened on the way.


19th July - The Boab Tree
Cruised on to the Boab Tree Rest Area. It's about 250k's up the road from Broome. A huge old Boab tree in the centre of the parking space. After a bit of research it would appear to be around 1000-1500 years old. Beautiful old tree, and we were lucky as it was covered with foliage. Most of them at this time of year have dropped all their leaves. It's about 12 metres across and is hollow inside. Nanny's having fun checking out all the bird life and checking through her book to identify each species.

   

It was nice and peaceful so we stayed here for two nights before moving on.

20th July - Mary Pool

From the Boab tree we travelled further north (actually east) through Fitzroy Crossing and then south and east to Mary River 108kms west of Halls Creek.

Bloody wind won't go away and fuel consumption's down a bit, Mary Pool was nice and relaxing.

I think it is on one of the many station through this area and it's set back from the road about 600 metres, over a river crossing and nestled in amongst a beautiful shady treed and semi-grassed area. Talk about popular. I think some of the residents must have been there for half their lifetime. We got in just after lunch and it was packed. Still we found a nice shady spot and set up camp.

 

After a walk up the river and a general sticky around the site it was time for afternoon drinkies. (I only drink when I'm thirsty), and bugger me if a herd of cattle didn't decide to come and visit. Friendly critters. Tawny had a face of with one of the raging beasts and she guarded the camp and defended our city.


21st July
Next day we drove on through Halls Creek to a spot called Lycester's Rest. 100kms north of Halls Creek. It's on the side of the old highway at a river crossing over the Ord river. Unfortunately it was completely dry. It appears that a young boy was killed in a car accident here and the site was dedicated by the local shire.

Bugger me! Another bull. These ones are a bit bigger. Brahma.

22nd July

Next day we tootled off up to the turnoff to Wyndam and Kukunurra and set up camp and dropped off the van. Nanny & I took off into Wyndam for a look while Lynn & Bob looked after the van at the camp spot.

We checked out the crocodile farm and the 5 rivers lookout. Both are well worth the look.

  

Back to the turnoff and camped for the night.

23rd July

Drove the vast distance from the turnoff to Kununarra (46kms).
